63) Amongst the Thorns by Louisa Crispin, companion to 63bee,
Tramping around the muddy fields searching for Blackthorn - how will I know it’s not a Hawthorn bush? Will it ever flower?
I naturally draw from life so this project was always going to be a challenge, relying on photographs, descriptions and my knowledge of bee anatomy. The flowers barely opened in time for the deadline, especially with the late spring this year. And I looked hard but confess I never saw a bee there.
I love these projects, a reason to study closely and learn about a particular species. A time to realise how delicately balanced the system is, so specialised, how easy it would be to lose it all.
