9 bee) Female Perkin's Mining Bee. Companion with 9a) by Kelly O'Brien which is also available on this website. One of the lovely vintage clockmaker's containers provides a beautiful safe space for this tiny little creature - it is 2.5x the actual size of the real bee.
'This is a scarce southern species recorded as far north as Warwickshire but with the majority of records in SE England and along the south coast. It occurs in a variety of umbellifer-rich habitats, including chalk grassland, coastal grassland, soft-rock cliffs, quarries and sometimes coastal grazing marsh. Adults fly in May and June and pollen seems to be obtained entirely from umbellifers. It seems particularly keen on Hemlock Water-dropwort, Hogweed and Alexanders, and was using Ground Elder at one Warwickshire site. Nesting seems to typically occur in very short turf or sparsely-vegetated areas on south-facing slopes. It is the special host of the rare cleptoparasitic nomad bee Nomada conjungens.' Steven Falk.

I made this by sculpting with wool, needle felting it into one of the vintage clockmaker's containers. I then finished with embroidery thread, vintage Kamibari gold thread and beads.
